Trips like these form the Blessed Edmund Rice Solidarity Initiative, named after the founder of the Christian Brothers, Brother Edmund Ignatius Rice.  These trips provide ways for young men and women to immerse themselves in the struggles and imagination of other peoples and other cities. Not for the feint of heart, the Rice Institute began in 2002 as a unique approach to devloping collegiate-level scholarship and research in high school students, providing them with one-on-one student/teacher interaction, and workshops with notable artists and thinkers.  Past lecturers include: Andrew Bujalski, Joe Cistone, Michael Connolly, Ann Crumb, Michael Dukakis, Jon Sawyer, Paul Elie, Larry Harbison, Chuck Hughes, Melinda Lopez, Malachy McCourt, Brian Mori, Ronan Noone, and Michael Rush.
